A hybrid or comfort bike works best. Most routes use paved paths or well-maintained roads. You don't need a racing bike or full suspension mountain bike. Something with decent tires and reliable brakes is all you really need.
Most routes have benches or village stops. Kilfinane village has cafes and seating areas. The Dairy Pasture loop passes near a few small villages where you can take a break. We always include rest point information in our route guides.
Spring through autumn is ideal. May to September gives you the warmest weather and longest daylight. Summer can be busy on popular routes. Early morning rides in spring are particularly peaceful, with fewer people around.

These routes exist because cycling shouldn't be stressful. We've designed them for people who want to get out, move at their own pace, and enjoy the countryside. No steep climbs, no technical sections, no need to keep up with anyone else. Each route has been tested by people in their sixties, seventies, and beyond. What matters is that you can spend two hours outside, see something beautiful, maybe chat with other riders, and feel good afterward. The routes work best on a calm morning or a quiet afternoon. You'll notice we don't include busy roads or tight traffic situations. Rest stops are marked clearly. The surfaces are well-maintained. If you haven't cycled in a while, start with the shortest route first. Most people are surprised how quickly they feel confident again once they're actually on the bike. Bring water, wear comfortable clothes, and don't worry about speed or distance. The point isn't to arrive anywhere in particular. It's to be outside, moving gently through the landscape, noticing things you'd miss from a car window.
